Cushing I Iowa a great place to live! Incorporated in 1883, this small, caring and quiet community with 220 people is located south of Highway 20 between Correctionville and Holstein (about 40 miles east of Sioux City). Cushing, which was originally called Penrose, celebrated its quasquicentennial in 2008. In the past year, the Old 20 Community Development Corporation was formed with the following mission statement: “To help create a thriving, vital community by developing initiatives committed to improving the quality of life for urban and rural Cushing, Iowa residents.” Each summer, Cushing offers events for the community to enjoy, such as the Old Fashion Wednesday Night “Cruise In” on June 27, Fire Department Summer Fundraiser in August, Methodist Church BBQ Sept. 9, and the Fire Department Stag on Nov. 15. The Cushing Library sponsors various activities for kids and adults throughout the year. Cushing also has Little League baseball games during the summer. What sets the community apart is its volunteerism. Cushing has a mayor‑council form of government, led by Mayor Don Joy Jr. and City Clerk Nicole Huisinga, and council members Shawn Joy, Dustin Schlenger, Jim Porter, Ray Endrulat and Ben Rabbass. Cushing prides itself on being a friendly town to everyone. We are a very supportive community that works together on community projects and events that benefit our community.
