Josh Doering joined Morningside’s Enterpreneurship Group and got excited about starting his own business.
His dad, a Pioneer dealer, had an idea. Instead of having to climb into a wagon to open a box of seed, they worked with a neighbor to develop a product that opens the box remotely.
They started with a market promotion of 30 units, got feedback from farmers, and made improvements to the product, which Doering branded as Seed Slide.
During a summer internship, Doering found a distributor to sell Seed Slide in the United States, Mexico and Canada. Later he won first prize – $5,000 – at a pitch competition in Chicago with “Shark Tank’s” Daymond John.
Mallory Sea thought she might like a career in biology or chemistry research. A professor encouraged her to apply for different research opportunities to see what she liked.
First she did research in Japan through the Amgen Scholars Program. Less than five percent of applicants were selected for this opportunity. She spent eight weeks in Tokyo doing chemistry research with one of the world’s leading scientists.
“It’s cutting-edge research,” she said. “For the field of medicine, it could be huge.”
Later Sea spent a semester in Panama doing biology research. She studied marine and terrestrial ecosystems along the Caribbean coast.
“I’ve always known that I’m a good student, but Morningside has made me aware of the opportunities that I could take,” she said. “I really just needed someone to be like, ‘Did you know you could do this?’ And Morningside has been fantastic for that.”
