I interviewed Meghan Markle three years ago and, to be honest, I don’t remember much of what she said.
At the television press tour to promote “Suits,” her USA series, the future Mrs. Prince Harry was well-spoken, attractive and very much a part of the show’s ensemble.
But a future royal? It didn’t register.
Markle, in fact, talked about her character, a paralegal, wearing designer clothes. “Lawyers just say to me, ‘I don’t think any paralegal could ever afford to dress that way.’”
When co-star Gina Torres said she had been to a White House Christmas party a year earlier, Markle responded: “Fancy.” Dress talk ensued and, then, Markle rationalized about her character: “She comes from money.”
She also talked about the show’s profanity and its late shooting schedule. When the cast is still filming at 3 or 4 a.m., “you get a bit of the giggles. Rachel (her character) and Harvey (Gabriel Macht) don’t have a lot of scenes together, but I always get excited when we do because we are going to laugh.”
Macht, she said, has a great laugh. And if he starts, it’s not easy to get away from it. She and others “just ride the wave.”
But Patrick J. Adams, who plays her fiancé on the show, tweeted Monday: “She said she was just going out to get some milk” then linked to the announcement of her engagement.
Markle is expected to leave the show at the end of the season, which could begin a new plotline.
Better clothes? As a member of the Royal family, she’s going to have access to the best designers in the world. The world of TV paralegals is definitely behind her.
