CRIME WATCH: No arrests yet in Sept. 9 Morningside homicide

A Sioux City police detective on Sept. 9 carries evidence bags down the driveway of the Applewood Avenue home where Ben Steffe was shot. Steffe, 66, died 11 days later. His death is still under investigation, police said.

SIOUX CITY | Nearly six months after his death, Sioux City police detectives are still looking for clues connected to the homicide of 66-year-old Ben Steffe who was shot at his Morningside home.

Police Capt. Lisa Claeys said officers conducted interviews during the last week of February, but no arrests have yet been made.

“We’re still working (the case),” Claeys said. “There’s nothing I can release because it’s an ongoing investigation."

Steffe was shot about 7 a.m. while lying in bed next to his wife at their home on Applewood Avenue. He was taken to the hospital where he died 11 days later.

Steffe’s nephew, Eric Riley, 41, was arrested the day of the shooting on suspicion of attempted murder and first-degree burglary. However, the charges were dropped Sept. 19 because police did not have sufficient evidence to sustain a charge, Claeys said.
