STORM LAKE, Iowa | Seven people arrested at a Fourth of July party in Storm Lake face drug charges. Police inadvertently found the party while investigating theft of an American flag.
Officers were called to the neighborhood for a report of two people stealing a flag from the front of a residence in the 800 block of East Milwaukee Avenue about 2:10 a.m.
A witness told police the suspects fled on a bicycle.
Police searching the neighborhood saw a bicycle parked in the driveway of a home in the 700 block of North Walnut Lane. While investigating the bicycle, officers smelled burnt marijuana coming from the house on North Walnut, police said.
Several people fled into the home. Police say they found two ounces of marijuana inside the residence.
Six people were arrested for misdemeanor charges of possession of drug paraphernalia, gathering where illegal substances were used or illegal alcohol possession. A seventh also was cited for interference with official acts.
The flag was not found.
Police say it is unclear if the flag theft and the party were related.
The theft is still under investigation.
