PENDER, Neb. | Thurston County has become the latest Nebraska county to receive the state's Livestock Friendly County designation.
Thurston County is the 43rd to receive the designation. There are 93 counties in Nebraska.
The Livestock Friendly County program, administered by the Nebraska Department of Agriculture, was created by the Nebraska Legislature in 2003 to recognize counties that support the livestock industry and new livestock developments. To be declared livestock friendly, a county must conduct a public hearing, and the county board must pass a resolution to apply for the designation.
