SIOUX CITY – Heather Reid, professor of philosophy at Morningside College, recently gave presentations around the world on the philosophy of sport.
She presented “Recollecting Virtue: Olympic Mimesis and Platonic Education” at the Sixth International Scholars’ Symposium in Ancient Olympia, Greece, that was organized by the International Olympic Academy with the Center for Hellenic Studies of Harvard University.
She presented “Athletic Beauty as Mimēsis of Virtue: The Case of the Beautiful Boxer" at the Third Interdisciplinary Symposium on the Heritage of Western Greece in Syracuse, Sicily. She organized the conference in cooperation with the Sicily Center for International Education.
In addition, she presented "The Value of Risk in Sport from Gilgamesh to Gridiron Gladiators" at the Muhammad Ali Center in Louisville, Kentucky, as part of a seminar on "Sports, Risk, and the Human Ideal" sponsored by the University of Louisville.
