May is Beef Month, a designation that honors an industry that's important to many people in the tri-state area. Here are a few facts about the beef industry in the three states.
According to the Iowa Beef Industry Council, Iowa was home to 4 million cattle as of Jan. 1. In 2016, the cattle industry contributed more than $6.3 billion in business activity to the state's economy, and 19,528 jobs in Iowa are directly related to the cattle industry.
The Nebraska Beef Council reported 6.8 million head of cattle in the state as of Jan. 1 and 2.77 million cattle on feed at that time, ranking first in the United States. Annual sales of beef in Nebraska total $6.5 billion.
The South Dakota Beef Council said the state has 3.95 million head of cattle and is home to more than 15,000 beef producers.
