PREP SOFTBALL: West Monona upsets Westwood

SLOAN, Iowa | West Monona got three hits apiece from Kylie Henschen and Lexi Lander to pull the 14-8 upset over Westwood on Wednesday.

Megan Nichols got the win as she overcame 11 hits and four walks while striking out three.

Westwood was paced by Kalie Toben who had two hits and two RBIs while Kalie Stanfield added a triple and drove in two.

West Monona is now 10-12 overall and 6-7 in conference play while Westwood is now 18-9 and 10-2.

SOUTH O'BRIEN 8 HARRIS-LAKE PARK 2: Bailey Tjossem threw a one-hitter with 12 strikeouts to pick up the win on Wednesday in Lake Park.

Taryn Hintz had a two-run homer and Jordan Nieuwenguis had two doubles and scored a run.

South O'Brien is now 9-10 overall and 5-4 in conference play. H-LP is 7-11.

AKRON-WESTFIELD 6, HINTON 0: Ann Hedlund gave up five hits and struck out nine to lead the Westerners to their 20th win of the season in Akron.

Brynn VanEldik had two doubles for Class 1A second-ranked A-W (20-2) and Kiana Appley had two hits.

The Blackhawks got two hits apiece from Kelli Gleason and Madison Kovarna. Hinton is now 9-9.

CHEROKEE 10, EMMETSBURG 2: Class 3A 15th-ranked Cherokee saw Lindsay Williams get the pitching win and go 4-for-4 at the plate.

Willaims allowed four hits and struck out five while being perfect at the plate. Kassidy Pingel went 3-for-4 with a double for the Braves (18-5) and Teagan Slaughter had two RBIs.

Emmetsburg's (9-15) Parker Traub had two hits.

GEHLEN 7, UNITY CHRISTIAN 2: Addison Weber had two hits and three RBIs and Kaylee Schmit had two hits and drive in two as Gehlen got the win in Orange City on Wednesday.

Grooke Woerdehoff got the win as she allowed seven hits, one earned run and six strikeouts.

Micah Byl led Unity with two hits.

Gehlen is now 9-14 and Unity is 4-14.

RIVER VALLEY 14, BOYER VALLEY 3: Makenna Thomas allowed three hits and struck out 10 to pick up the victory in Dunlap on Wednesday. Thomas also had a two-run home run.

Kendall Fitch had three doubles and three RBIs for River Valley.

Brittany Schumate led Boyer Valley with a double and an RBI.

Late Tuesday

OKOBOJI 6, POCAHONTAS 5: Okoboji scored all six of its runs in the fifth inning to earn the victory Tuesday.

Annie Klatt hit a home run among her two hits for Okoboji and Lindsey Wittrock went 2-for-3.

Pocahontas was led by Haley Beekman who had two hits including a home run.

PREP BASEBALL: Velasquez's one-hitter leads Heelan

SIOUX CITY | Christian Velasquez threw a one-hitter in a five inning 14-0 victory over Council Bluffs St. Albert on Wednesday.

Velasquez struck out four and did not issue a walk as he had a no-hitter going until a single in the fifth.

At the plate, Mason Heaton went 2-for-2 with three runs scored, Collin Kasperbauer had a triple and drove in three, Jack Boever had two hits and 2 RBI and Matt Nelson had a pair of doubles to plate two.

Heelan has now gone 4-0 to start a busy week to improve to 16-9. St. Albert fell to 14-8. The Crusaders host North for a doubleheader on Thursday.

WEST SIOUX 2, REMSEN ST. MARY’S 0: Jake Lynott hiked his season pitching record to 4-0, scattering six hits while striking out seven as Class 1A 10th-ranked West Sioux posted a War Eagle Conference win at Remsen Wednesday night.

West Sioux (14-4) received an RBI single from Chase Koopmans in the third inning. Sixth-inning action saw Tucker VanderFeen walk with the bases loaded to drive in a run.

Losing pitcher Jacob Wesselmann (3-3) allowed one earned run, seven hits and three walks while striking out nine for Remsen St. Mary’s (14-7). Wesselmann also went 2-for-3 at the plate.

Late Tuesday

REMSEN ST. MARY'S 8, SOUTH O'BRIEN 0: David Grady threw a two-hitter in a game that was made up after a Friday rainout.

Grady struck out eight and did not allow a walk in six innings of work.

Jacob Wesselmann had two hits including a double and R.J. Staab had two hits and drove in three.
