NORTH SIOUX CITY | Dakota Valley came up with a pair of long scoring plays to break out after a scoreless first half and went on to defeat Dell Rapids 20-0 in a season-opening football game for both teams Friday night.

The Panthers only completed one pass all night long, but it was a big one. Quarterback Zack Poulsen hit Luke Johnson for a 90-yard touchdown on DV's first possession after intermission to break the deadlock.

Dakota Valley got an insurance touchdown early in the fourth quarter when Austin Carter ran eight yards for a TD to cap an eight-play, 51-yard drive and give the Panthers a 14-0 lead.

Running back Nathan Rice broke free with the Panthers trying to run out the clock and went 95 yards for a touchdown with 3:15 left in the game. Rice paced Dakota Valley with 103 yards rushing on seven carries while Sam Chesterman ran 14 times for 86 yards and Carter had 13 totes for 70 yards.

The Panthers are on the road next Friday at Todd County.
