SIOUX CITY -- Payge Ronfeldt made two free throws with 10 seconds left, lifting Woodbury Central to a 46-44 victory over East in a girls' basketball nonconference contest Saturday evening at East High.
Black Raiders sophomore Laken Gardner knotted the score at 44-44 with a three-pointer.
Ronfeldt then broke free and had a chance for a layup stopped by an East foul. The WC senior stepped to the line and sank both charity tosses for the victors, who trailed by one point at 30-29 entering the final stanza.
Ronfeldt led all scorers with 16 points, including a 4-4 effort at the free throw line. She also added five rebounds for Coach Matt Jenness' club. Junior Sally Gallagher, who finished 7-8 from the free throw line, had 11 points, seven rebounds and three steals. Lindsie Graff, a freshman, sank two three-pointers as part of a 10-point effort that also included a trio of thefts. Junior Sidnie Steffen contributed seven points and a half-dozen assists.
Three sophomores highlighted the East High effort, including Gardner's nine points. Post Nya Malout had 10 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Kennedy McCloy contributed 10 points for the squad of Coach Brian Drent, which fell to 1-10 on the season. Senior scoring leader Taylor Copple missed her fifth straight game for East High, who hosts West High on Monday.
Woodbury Central (10-4), playing its second consecutive game without leading scorer and rebounder Maddie Paulsen, pays a visit to Gehlen Catholic High School in Le Mars on Monday for a nonconference encounter with the Jays.
