SIOUX CITY -- Ashtyn Veerbeek scored 16 of her game-high 28 points in the fourth quarter as Western Christian held off Sioux City East 53-41 in a girls basketball season opener Tuesday at East High.

Veerbeek scored 16 of the Wolfpack's 19 points in the final eight minutes as the fourth-ranked Class 2A club pulled away late from a narrow one-point lead at 34-33 with a little over six minutes left.

Olivia Granstra added 12 points, hitting three three-pointers in the second half, including two in the third quarter as the visitors maintained the lead.

Lauren Van Dyke was the lone Black Raider in double figures with 14 points.
