BELLEVUE, Neb. | The fifth-ranked (4A) Bishop Heelan volleyball team finished with a 4-2 record in the always rugged Bellevue West Invitational volleyball tournament, played here on Friday and Saturday.

Heelan picked up three victories on Saturday, including a 21-25, 25-23, 25-13 win over Lincoln Northeast in the consolation championship. The Crusaders did, though, claim the Silver Division team title. Heelan also beat Lincoln East 25-20, 25-21 and North Platte 23-25, 25-23, 25-22.

Sam McCabe totaled 30 kills Saturday, while Nicole Jacobson added 26 and Alex Hope 15. Jacobson and Hope also had four ace serves each and McCabe five, while Hope charted six blocks, Jacobson five and McCabe four.

Emma LaFleur amassed 48 assists and Jordan Knapp 29. Allison Bermel, Jacobson and McCabe each finished with 37 digs.

Seventh-ranked (A) Lincoln Southeast swept Heelan 25-23, 25-17 in the first match Friday and top-ranked (B) Omaha Skutt swept Heelan 25-16, 25-23 in the second match. The Crusaders rebounded to sweep Bellevue East 25-9, 25-16 in the third match.

Heelan evened its overall record at 5-5 and opens Missouri River Conference action on Tuesday, Sept. 12 at home against Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln and Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson.

WESTERN CHRISTIAN PLACES SIXTH: The second-ranked (2A) Western Christian volleyball team placed sixth at the Bellevue West Invitational on Saturday.

Fifth-ranked (A) Papillion La Vista defeated Western Christian 25-17, 23-25, 25-12 in the first match on Saturday. Western Christian defeated Millard South 25-21, 18-25, 26-24 in the second match, then second-ranked (A) Millard North swept Western Christian 25-16, 25-19 in the fifth-place match.

Ashtyn Veerbeek finished with 53 kills and 19 blocks for Western Christian (3-3). Jessi De Jager notched 40 kills and Cori De Jong added 22. Olivia Granstra dished out 76 assists and Tori Wynja had 51. Emma Bousema notched 52 digs, Madison Hofman logged 51 and Chandler Schemper added 49.

The Wolfpack went 2-1 on Friday at the invite. Western Christian swept both Omaha Westside (25-13, 25-23) and Omaha Burke (25-22, 25-23) but lost to top-ranked (A) Marian (25-19, 25-11).
