SCHUYLER, Neb. | South Sioux City forged its first halftime lead of the season but Schuyler scored back to back touchdowns in the second half and held off a late Cardinal rally to win a 21-18 prep football game Friday.
Kevin Contreras scored on a five-yard run with 2:12 left in the third quarter to give the Warriors a 14-12 lead and Jesus Maganda added a one-yard run with 7:06 left in regulation to put Schuyler up 21-12.
South Sioux City got to within 21-18 on a 42-yard TD pass from Nate Canoles to Dathon Klassen with 4:56 left and the Cardinals had a drive in the closing seconds reach the Schuyler 31 before a pass to the end zone was broken up to end the game.
The Warriors got the jump on South Sioux City in the battle of winless teams, scoring on its first offensive play when Contreras passed 47 yards to Tychique Kutalu for a touchdown and a 7-0 lead.
South Sioux City pulled to within 7-6 on a 28-yard pass from Nate Canoles with 8:10 left in the third quarter, then took a 12-7 lead 2:12 before the intermission on a five-yardrun by Izzy Miranda.
SSC quarterback Canoles was 21-for-34 passing for 267 yards and two touchdowns and also rushed for a team-high 57 yards. He ended his season with 969 yards passing.
Klassen caught three passes for 70 yards while Miranda had six catches for 62 yards for the Cardinals.
