SIOUX CITY -- The Betty Strong Encounter Center will present "Fall-ing Into American Music," a program by Siouxland Federated Music Club (SFMC) teachers and students, at 2 p.m. Sunday. Admission will be free; a reception will follow.
The audience will hear SFMC teachers and students present music by American composers. SFMC is a private, nonprofit organization comprising music teachers who work to advance high musical standards and stimulate public appreciation for American music.
Music connects to Lewis & Clark Expedition history. The explorers' journals describe occasions along the trail when music figured into birthday and holiday celebrations and encounters with Native peoples.
Pvts. Pierre Cruzatte and George Gibson fiddled for the soldiers' entertainment. Cruzatte was the expedition's main boatman and fiddler. The son of a French father and Omaha mother, Cruzatte also played the jawharp, bones, and spoons.
