SIOUX CITY -- Sunnybrook Community Church bursts with activity two Wednesday mornings each month as a local MOPS group convenes.

MOPS stands for Mothers of Preschoolers. Actually, the group invites any mother of a child age zero to kindergarten.

"MOPS exists to encourage, equip and develop every mother of preschoolers to help her realize her potential as a woman, mother and leader," says Beth Thelander of Lawton, Iowa.

Speakers can range from educators to mothers of multiples to those in the medical profession and more. The group also observes a devotional time, a craft time, a time for small-group discussion and time spent going through a breakfast buffet prepared by members.

"We also have several mentor moms who have kids who are college age or so," says Thelander, the group's co-coordinator. "They take turns sharing a small devotional or encourage us through the sharing of situations they've been through."

Childcare is provided at the church while the group meets. Children are divided by age and have the chance to participate in various activities as well as a snack time.

Dues are $75 per year, money which helps pay for crafts and treats. Scholarships based on need can be awarded to those expressing an interest in joining.

For information, call Beth Thelander at (712) 944-5415.

Editor's note: A Northside MOPS group meets 9 to 11:30 a.m. the first and third Tuesday of each month, September through May, at Central Baptist Church at 4001 Indian Hills Dr., Sioux City. For information on the Northside MOPS group, call Kristin at (712) 389-4753 or Nickie at (712) 255-3678.
