Murphy Companies of North Sioux City, S.D., has grown by leaps and bounds in the past 10-15 years by expanding its full-service commercial insulation business all over the country.
Recently recognized in a trade magazine for its growth, the family-owned business specializes in the installation of building insulation for general contractors and mechanical pipe insulation for industrial mechanical contractors.
A crew of 70 to 100 travels nationwide to install commercial insulation in hotels, apartment complexes, cold storage facilities, packing houses and industrial plants, among other structures.
"If a customer has a need somewhere, we'll go. With our equipment and crews, there's not a lot of projects we can't handle," said company President Ben Murphy, who grew the business into three companies and began offering comprehensive insulation services, including mechanical and industrial.
At any given time, Murphy Companies may be working on more than 200 projects. They have done jobs in Georgia, Pennsylvania, Idaho, North Dakota, Washington, New York, Texas, Utah, and many other states.
He said Murphy Companies can go anywhere in the country because of their strategically centralized 15,000-square-foot location in North Sioux City and their satellite warehouses in Des Moines, Iowa, and Williston, N.D.
The company was able to expand exponentially because of their willingness to move into other territories, including the oil fields in North Dakota, diversify their companies and projects, and build a strong relationship and reputation with contractors in the construction industry.
"We do what we say, we do great work, and we have good people who work for us. We get most of our business through word of mouth and repeat business," he said.
Murphy Companies was established in 1994 by Mike Murphy and his business partner Tim Merchant as a side business with a focus on residential insulation in the Siouxland area. Ben worked in the business at night and on the weekends when he was in high school and took it over full time in 2005.
