The Skinny: The loss to Wisconsin in Big Ten semifinal didn't dissuade selection committee from giving the Hoosiers a No. 1 seed. Talented team led by one of the best players in the country in Cody Zeller.

#16 LIU Brooklyn (20-13)

Nickname: Blackbirds. Coach: Jim Ferry.

Conference: Northeast. Bid: Northeast champion.

Tournament Record: 0-5, 5 years. Last NCAA Appearance: 2012.

Scoring: Team (79.5); Jamal Olasewere 18.9; Julian Boyd 18.5; C.J. Garner 16.1; Jason Brickman 9.1.

The Skinny: The Blackbirds had four players suspended in the fall and reigning NEC player of the year Julian Boyd tore his ACL in December. After the late-season run they had, don't be surprised if they bust a few brackets.

#16 James Madison (20-14)

Conference: Colonial Athletic Association. Bid: CAA champion.

Tournament Record: 3-4, 4 years. Last NCAA Appearance: 1994.

The Skinny: The Dukes are in the NCAA tournament for the first time in 19 years. Used to be known as giant killers with NCAA wins over Georgetown, Ohio State and West Virginia on the wins list.

#8 North Carolina State (24-10)

Conference: Atlantic Coast. Bid: At large.

The Skinny: The Wolfpack didn't live up to their high preseason ranking (No. 6), but returned the core of team that went to Sweet 16 a year ago and will be a dangerous draw.

The Skinny: Owls are making sixth straight NCAA tournament appearance after beating ranked teams Syracuse and VCU during the regular season.

The Skinny: Rebels lost a tough one to New Mexico in Mountain West tittle game, but with dynamic players like Anthony Bennett and Mike Moser, don't be surprised if they go deep.

Conference: Pacific 12. Bid: At large.

The Skinny: Upset loss to Utah in Pac-12 tournament apparently didn't hurt the Bears. Opening game against UNLV might.

#4 Syracuse (26-9)

Nickname: Orangemen. Coach: Jim Boeheim.

Tournament Record: 56-35, 35 years. Last appearance: 2012.

The Skinny: Ugly finish to final Big East tourney, but these Orange can play and Jim Boeheim is one of the best minds in the game.

#13 Montana (25-6)

Nickname: Grizzlies. Coach: Wayne Tinkle.

Conference: Big Sky. Bid: Big Sky champion.

Tournament Record: 2-10, 9 years. Last appearance: 2012.

The Skinny: With Will Cherry and Kareem Jamar in the backcourt, don't be surprised if the Big Sky champs give Syracuse some trouble.

#6 Butler (26-8)

The Skinny: Co-champions in Big East after going 14-4 in one of the nation's toughest conferences. Not bad for a team that lost Big East player of the year Jae Crowder from last year.

#14 Davidson (26-7)

Conference: Southern. Bid: Southern champion.

Tournament Record: 8-12, 11 years. Last appearance: 2012.

The Skinny: Jake Cohen is the first two-time SoCon player of the year since Stephen Curry. Can he lead the Wildcats on another wild run?

#7 Illinois (22-12)

Nickname: Fighting Illini. Coach: John Groce.

Conference: Big ten. Bid: At large.

Tournament Record: 39-30, 29 years. Last NCAA Appearance: 2011.

Scoring: Team (69.1); Brandon Paul 16.6; D.J. Richardson 12.4; Tracy Abrams 10.6.

The Skinny: Illini sort of flew under the radar this season, but are a dangerous team. Being one of two teams to beat top-ranked Gonzaga — in Spokane, no less — should prove that.

#10 Colorado (21-11)

Nickname: Buffaloes. Coach: Tad Boyle.

Conference: Pac-12. Bid: At large.

Tournament Record: 10-13, 13 years. Last appearance: 2012.

The Skinny: Colorado is making its first back-to-back trips in 50 years (1961-62 & 1962-63).

#2 Miami (27-6)

The Skinny: The Hurricanes were one of college hoops' biggest surprise this season. They also happen to be really good, sweeping the ACC regular-season and tournament titles.

#1 Gonzaga (31-2)

Conference: West Coast. Bid: WCC champion.

Tournament Record: 17-15, 15 years. Last appearance: 2012.

Scoring: Team (77.6); Kelly Olynyk 17.5; Elias Harris 14.9; Kevin Pangos 11.5; Gary Bell Jr. 9.2.

The Skinny: Zags, with few weaknesses, ended the regular season No. 1. A mid-major is the No. 1 seed in the West Region.

#16 Southern U. (23-9)

Nickname: Jaguars. Coach: Roman Banks.

Conference: Southwestern Athletic. Bid: SWAC champion.

Tournament Record: 1-7, 7 years. Last NCAA Appearance: 2006.

Scoring: Team (67.7); Derick Beltran 15.9; Malcolm Miller 15.8; Javan Mitchell 9.5; Jameel Grace 9.2.

The Skinny: Roman Banks has taken Jaguars from last to first in two seasons with a SWAC championship.

#8 Pittsburgh (24-8)

Nickname: Panthers. Coach: Jamie Dixon.

Tournament Record: 23-24, 23 years. Last appearance: 2011.

The Skinny: The Panthers have wins over Georgetown, Syracuse and two over Villanova on their resume.

#9 Wichita State (26-8)

Nickname: Shockers. Coach: Gregg Marshall.

Conference: Missouri Valley. Bid: At large.

Tournament Record: 8-10, 9 years. Last appearance: 2012.

Scoring: Team (69.4); Cleanthony Early 13.6; Carl Hall 12.8; Malcolm Armstead 10.4.

The Skinny: Strong nonconference schedule helped Shockers get into the bracket for the second straight season.

#5 Wisconsin (23-11)

The Skinny: Winning the Big Ten tournament title says a lot. Having a coach like Bo Ryan certainly doesn't hurt.

#12 Mississippi (26-8)

Conference: Southeatern. Bid: SEC champion.

Tournament Record: 3-6, 6 year. Last NCAA Appearance: 2002.

The Skinny: Marshall Henderson could be this year's Jimmer Fredette.

#4 Kansas State (27-7)

The Skinny: Won share of Big 12 regular-season title and got to tournament title game in first season under coach Bruce Weber. Not bad, not bad at all.

#13 Boise State (21-10)

Tournament Record: 0-5, 5 years. Last NCAA Appearance: 2008.

The Skinny: The Broncos sneaked into the bracket for the first time since 2008 after finishing fifth in Mountain West. Get past La Salle and they might have trouble sneaking past Kansas State.

#13 La Salle (21-9)

Conference: Atlantic 10. Bid: At large.

Tournament Record: 11-10, 11 years. Last appearance: 1992.

The Skinny: Wins over Butler and VCU helped erase a couple of early-season losses to get the Explorers into the bracket.

#6 Arizona (25-7)

Tournament Record: 46-28, 29 years. Last NCAA Appearance: 2011.

The Skinny: Loads of talent, will need to find defensive consistency to make a run. Watch for Sean Miller's death stare. One of the best in college hoops.

#11 Belmont (26-6)

Nickname: Bruins. Coach: Rick Byrd.

Conference: Ohio Vally. Bid: OVC champion.

Tournament Record: 0-5, 5 years. Last NCAA Appearance: 2012.

The Skinny: Bruins have become bracket regulars. They're still waiting to get past the first round, but may have a shot if Arizona doesn't guard them on the perimeter.

#3 New Mexico (29-5)

Nickname: Lobos. Coach: Steve Alford.

Conference: Mountain West. Bid: MWC champion.

Tournament Record: 8-14, 13 years. Last appearance: 2012.

The Skinny: The tournament champion from the conference with the highest RPI, might have a chance to go deep in the bracket.

#14 Harvard (19-9)

Conference: Ivy League. Bid: Ivy champion.

Tournament Record: 0-3, 2 years. Last appearance: 2012.

Scoring: Team (68.9); Wesley Saunders 16.5; Siyani Chambers 12.9; Laurent Rivard 10.4.

The Skinny: Won third straight Ivy League title, but making second straight NCAA appearance. Keep an eye on Siyani Chambers, the freshman with the cool name and sweet game.

#7 Notre Dame (25-9)

Conference: Big East. Bid: At large.

Tournament Record: 31-36, 32 years. Last appearance: 2012.

The Skinny: After great start, Irish labored through Big East schedule. With bullish Jack Cooley roaming around, they'll be a tough matchup in the tournament.

#10 Iowa State (22-11)

Conference: Big 12. Bid: At large.

Tournament Record: 13-14, 14 years. Last appearance: 2012.

The Skinny: Good RPI, strong finish to the season and a comeback win over Oklahoma in Big 12 tournament gets the Cyclones back in the tournament for the second straight season.

Conference: Big Ten. Bid: Big Ten champion.

Tournament Record: 51-27, 28 years. Last appearance: 2012.

The Skinny: Buckeyes went to Final Four last season. Do-everything guard Aaron Craft could get them there again.

#15 Iona (20-13)

Nickname: Gaels. Coach: Tim Cluess.

Conference: Metro Atlantic Athletic. Bid: MAAC champion.

Tournament Record: 1-9, 9 years. Last appearance: 2012.

Scoring: Team (80.7); Lamont Jones 23.0; Sean Armand 16.6; David Laury 13.1.

The Skinny: MAAC champs play fast, shoot 3s and score in bunches. The key for the Gaels will be keeping the other team from scoring — they were 331st in scoring defense.
