DES MOINES, Iowa | The jazz band at Alta-Aurelia High School won the Class 2A title in the Iowa Jazz Championships at the Iowa Events Center in Des Moines on Tuesday night.

The band, under the direction of Corbet Butler, edged Okoboji High School for the crown, making it the third straight state championship for the musicians from Alta-Aurelia.

It marked the first time this year Alta-Aurelia had defeated Okoboji in competition.

"Okoboji and Director Greg Forney had a phenomenal performance," said Butler. "I think we peaked at just the right time."

Theses two Northwest Iowa Class 2A schools were joined in the finals by another local representative. Sioux City North earned a berth in the finals in Class 4A, but lost to West Des Moines Valley.

Alta-Aurelia's musicians will be welcomed home Wednesday afternoon, first during a stop at the Alta-Aurelia Middle School in Aurelia, Iowa, and then at a rally at the high school.
