ORANGE CITY, Iowa | Annual pay for county supervisors now tops $30,000 in six of 13 Northwest Iowa counties, a Journal analysis of new budget data shows.

The top paid supervisor in the region is Woodbury County chairman Matthew Ung, whose salary is $39,461 for the fiscal year starting July 1. The four other supervisors -- Jeremy Taylor, Marty Pottebaum, Keith Radig and Rocky De Witt -- are paid $33,151.

As a whole, supervisors in Sioux County are the highest paid, with $38,104 per year for chairman Mark Sybesma and $36,104 for four other board members -- Al Bloemendaal, John Degen, Arlyn Kleinwolterink and Dennis Wright

The second-highest paid supervisors overall are in Dickinson County, where chairman William Leupold now receives $36,184 per year and board members Pam Jordan, Mardi Allen, Paul Johnson and Tim Fairchild collect $35,184 apiece.

The $33,854 annual salaries for the five Plymouth County supervisors -- Don Kass, Craig Anderson, Mark Loutsch, John Meis and Gary Horton -- are slightly higher than four of the supervisors in Woodbury County.

Woodbury is Iowa's sixth largest county with an estimated population of 102,779 on July 1, 2016. Among Iowa's 99 counties, Sioux is the 20th most populous with an estimate of 34,898, while Dickinson ranks 43rd with 17,243.

Supervisors in three other area counties -- Plymouth, Buena Vista and Sac -- cracked the $30,000 salary mark. Buena Vista and Plymouth have five members, while Sac, like some other counties, have three-member boards.

Osceola County supervisors are the lowest paid supervisors in the region, with chairman Mike Schulte at $23,084, and Jayson VandeHoef, LeRoy DeBoer, Jerry Helmers and Ed Jones at $22,084 apiece.

Across the state, county compensation boards were charged recently with whether to recommend pay raises for supervisors and other elected county officials for the 2017-18 fiscal year. As part of finalizing their budgets, the county board of supervisors either accepted or reduced the proposed increases.

In Woodbury County, the supervisors accepted a recommendation that their pay be frozen, and reduced recommended raises for other elected courthouse officials to 2 to 2.5 percent.

Across Northwest Iowa, county attorneys are the highest paid county officials, followed by county sheriffs, according to the Journal's analysis.

P.J. Jennings of Woodbury County is the top paid county attorney with a fiscal 2018 salary of $123,221, followed by Thomas Kunstle of Sioux County with a salary of $117,437.

Here are key budget stats for the FY 2018 year in area counties, including the number of employees, property tax levy rates, total budget and salaries for elected officials. Clay County did not provide data by the Journal's deadline Friday.
