IDA GROVE, IOWA -- The Ida Grove Fire Department, along with fire departments from Battle Creek and Arthur, battled a blaze at GOMACO Corp.'s Plant Number 2 Monday night, said Ida Grove Fire Chief Jim Meier.

According to Meier, firefighters were called to the company's East Highway 175 location at approximately 6:45 p.m. and remained on the scene for more than an hour-and-a-half.

The plant's roof had caved in during the winter and construction workers were cutting and removing I-beams Monday, Meier said. He said sparks from a welding torch may have ignited some roofing material inside the plant, causing the blaze.

Meier said the Iowa State Fire Marshal has been contacted to investigate the fire.
