MAPLETON, Iowa -- Electricity and gas service are being restored to homes and businesses that have been deemed safe after a tornado wiped out utilities as it tore through this Monona County town Saturday night.
According to a release from Mapleton Tornado Incident Command, electricity will be restored to about 95 percent of customers by day's end.
As the town's debris cleanup effort continues, volunteers who would like to help are asked to check in at the Mapleton Community Center at 115 Main St. Gloves and cleaning supplies are needed,
Gas service is being restored to locations that are deemed safe and if electrical service is on and the homeowner is present, the release says.
With a damage assessment half-completed, 142 homes and businesses have been found to be damaged or destroyed, but officials don't yet have a damage estimate.
