SIOUX CITY | Six cats and two ferrets perished in a house fire on Sioux City's west side Thursday afternoon.

Assistant Fire Chief Dan Cougill said crews received an alarm at 3:38 p.m. for a structure fire at 1917 W. First St. Upon arrival, smoke was coming from the front of the house and firefighters located a fire in a joined living room and kitchen area.

"The fire was extinguished fairly quickly," Cougill said. "But it had been burning for some time. There's extensive damage to the first level of the home."

Investigators are currently working to determine the cause of the fire.

No one was home at the time and there were no injuries.

Unconscious cats could be seen being carried out of the home and attempts to resuscitate the felines were unsuccessful. The deceased ferrets were carried out wrapped in sheets.

A dog that was outside the home at the time of the fire was unharmed.

The home is considered to be a total loss.
