ALTA, Iowa | Four people were seriously injured when a car was hit by a train in Alta on Thursday. Two of the victims were children.

They were hurt when a northbound car was hit by a westbound Canadian National train at a crossing on Main Street about 4:22 p.m., according to a statement from the Buena Vista County Sheriff's Office.

Alta firefighters freed all four victims from the wrecked vehicle.

The children, ages 2 and 4, were flown by helicopter to a hospital in Sioux Falls.

Police didn't release the names of the injured. Details of their conditions were not released Thursday night.

A railroad spokesman said the train crew was not hurt.

Deputies believe the warning signals at the crossing were functioning properly.

The crash was still under investigation Thursday night.
