ALTA, Iowa | Four people were seriously injured when a car was hit by a train in Alta on Thursday. Two of the victims were children.
They were hurt when a northbound car was hit by a westbound Canadian National train at a crossing on Main Street about 4:22 p.m., according to a statement from the Buena Vista County Sheriff's Office.
Alta firefighters freed all four victims from the wrecked vehicle.
The children, ages 2 and 4, were flown by helicopter to a hospital in Sioux Falls.
Police didn't release the names of the injured. Details of their conditions were not released Thursday night.
A railroad spokesman said the train crew was not hurt.
Deputies believe the warning signals at the crossing were functioning properly.
The crash was still under investigation Thursday night.
