STORM LAKE, Iowa | Breakage of a 24-inch sewer line has caused a major residential wastewater discharge to Storm Lake.
City staff estimate up to 450 or 500 gallons per minute of residential wastewater could be discharging into the lake south of King's Pointe Resort, according to a news release from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.
Repair work on Friday apparently damaged the line, allowing untreated sewage to flow into a storm sewer that runs into Storm Lake. City staff on Monday morning discovered wastewater flowing under and over the ice near King's Pointe Resort.
There is no industrial wastewater discharge, only residential, according to the DNR.
As of Monday afternoon, the DNR was working with the city on temporary repairs. Both city and DNR staff encourage anglers and others to avoid the area, adding that discharge could affect ice safety.
Fish should be safe to eat but should be thoroughly rinsed off before cleaning.
City staff are unsure when permanent repairs will be completed.
