Sioux City House Fire Oct. 31

Sioux City Fire Rescue responds to a house fire in the 2000 block of South Nicollet Street Tuesday. Investigators have traced the cause of the fire to an electrical arc in the attic space above the second-story bathroom.

SIOUX CITY | A homeowner came home to their upstairs bathroom in flames Tuesday.

Sioux City Fire Rescue Assistant Chief Dan Cougill said crews were dispatched at 2:48 p.m. to 2023 S. Nicollet St. for a structure fire.

Upon arrival, firefighters found smoke coming from the second floor in the northeast corner of the building and found the fire in the upstairs bathroom that had extended to the walls and up to the attic.

Cougill said no one was home when the fire started, but the homeowner walked in and found smoke in the house and called 911.

He said the damage is "pretty significant" in the bathroom and attic. There is also a "fair amount" of water damage. The department is investigating what caused the fire.

"There is a city inspector on the way out to do his inspection also; most likely the home will be red tagged," Cougill said.

There were no injuries.
