SIOUX CITY | Pickleball players young and old can now purchase memberships to play the popular sport at the Long Lines Family Rec Center during open gym hours.
The Parks and Recreation Department is offering a $25 membership that will be good through June 30, 2018. For that price, members can play during open gym hours, typically 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
The city recently resurfaced the flooring of the Long Lines gym and striped the courts for pickleball as well as basketball and volleyball.
Pickleball is a scaled-down cousin to tennis that trades in rackets for paddles and whiffleball-style balls. It has increased in local popularity over the past three years, following a similar nationwide trend. Local pickleballers have also frequented the Sergeant Bluff Community Center in recent years.
Registration for the Long Lines pickleball membership is available at the Parks and Rec office on the east side of the Long Lines, 401 Gordon Drive.
The city has additionally striped the six outdoor tennis courts at Leif Erickson Park, 1100 31st St., with lines for the sport.
