NEWELL, Iowa | An autopsy is planned after a Newell man died while swimming at a Northwest Iowa gravel pit, authorities said Tuesday.

Kurtis Kruse, 49, slipped beneath the surface and disappeared while swimming at Sturchler's Pit about 8:15 p.m. Monday, according to the Buena Vista County Sheriff's Office.

He did not resurface.

Rescuers found Kruse's body about 9:40 p.m., deputies said.

The incident is under investigation.

Kruse is the fifth person to die in a Siouxland waterway in little more than a month.

On June 14, Anthony Campbell, 25, drowned while swimming in the Missouri River off Scenic Park Campground in South Sioux City.

The body of a South Sioux City man in his 80s was pulled from nearly the same spot off the campground on July 10. Police have not released the man's name but said foul play was not suspected.

Jaime Adan-Jaime, 28, of Ireton, Iowa, drowned when his fishing boat capsized on Storm Lake in rough water July 4.

And on Sunday, Derick Vielguth, 23, drowned after he slipped and fell into the Little Sioux River south of Oto.
