SPENCER, Iowa | A Lake Park, Iowa, man suffered life-threatening injuries when a pickup struck him on a Clay County highway early Monday, authorities said.

Marlyn D. Van Tol, 59, was transported to Spencer Hospital after the incident, which occurred shortly after 8:30 a.m. in the eastbound lane of Highway 18 just west of 300th Avenue, according to a news release from the Iowa State Patrol.

The release said Van Tol was standing near a 2010 International semi tractor parked on the south shoulder of the eastbound lane when he and the parked semi were struck by an oncoming 2015 Ford F-250 driven by Jeffery D. Cadwell, 33, of Ayrshire, Iowa.

Both vehicles suffered minor damage.
