YANKTON, S.D. -- One person was killed and another was seriously injured in a one-vehicle crash north of Yankton on Sunday night.
The South Dakota Department of Public Safety did not immediately release the names of the people involved, pending notification of families.
A 1988 Ford Explorer was northbound on U.S. Highway 81, when the driver failed to stay in the lane, crossing over the center line and into the southbound lane. The Ford Explorer driver lost control when he swerved after coming into contact with a southbound vehicle. The Explorer went across the southbound lane before entering the west ditch, where it rolled.
Neither occupant was wearing a seatbelt, and both were thrown from the vehicle. A 21-year-old female passenger was airlifted to a Sioux Falls hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
The 23-year-old male driver suffered non-life-threatening injuries. He was taken by ambulance to a Yankton hospital.
According to a news release, charges are pending against the driver, and the South Dakota Highway Patrol is still investigating the accident.
