STORM LAKE, Iowa | The mother of a 3-year-old girl police say drove a car into a mailbox in Storm Lake was cited for an insurance violation.
The Spirit Lake, Iowa, woman's daughter hit the mailbox about 9 p.m. in the 1800 block of East Milwaukee Avenue on April 5, police said Friday.
Police say the child and her 13-month-old sister were buckled into car seats while their mother was unloading groceries. The older girl freed herself and put the car into gear.
The children's mother twisted her knee while jumping into the car as it rolled backward. Police say the woman was able to stop the vehicle, but not before it hit the mailbox.
The children were not harmed. The mailbox received $300 worth of damage.
The children's mother was cited for not having insurance.
