SIOUX CITY -- The Sioux City Public Library's Summer Reading Program will begin June 1, with a series of family kick-off events scheduled that week.
Children participating in the program can read their way to prizes and attend more activities throughout the summer. They can sign up for the program at any of the three drop-in events or at any library location throughout the summer.
The first event, scheduled 2 to 4 p.m. June 1 at the Aalfs Downtown Library, 529 Pierce St., will be Harry Potter themed. Participants can test their knowledge of the character through Harry Potter trivia and attend classes on magic and potions.
On June 5 from 10:30 a.m. to noon, attendees can create a decorative stone at the Perry Creek Branch Library, 2912 Hamilton Blvd., to display in their home garden.
On June 6 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Morningside Branch Library, 4005 Morningside Ave., kids can stop in for music and a summer dance party.
"Children gain new experiences while keeping their minds sharp during Summer Reading at the library," youth services manager Adrienne Jansen said in a press release. She said activities this summer will include "animal ambassadors" from the Henry Doorly Zoo, a mystery to solve and experiments with new technology.
A full calendar of events is available at the library and on the library's website.
