YANKTON, S.D. -- One person was killed and another was seriously injured in a one-vehicle crash north of Yankton on Sunday night.
Lufkins lost control when he swerved after coming into contact with a southbound vehicle. The Explorer went across the southbound lane and into the west ditch where it rolled.
Both occupants in the Ford Explorer were not wearing seatbelts and were thrown from the vehicle. Lufkins' 21-year-old female passenger, Lucille Casiano, was airlifted to a Sioux Falls hospital where she was pronounced dead.
Lufkins suffered serious non-life threatening injuries. He was taken by ambulance to a Yankton hospital. Charges are pending against him, and the Explorer was reportedly stolen from a Yankton residence earlier that day.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
