BRONSON, Iowa | An early morning fire Sunday destroyed the Bronson Bar and Grill, the community's only restaurant, Bronson Fire Chief Jamie Amick said.

"We're pretty sure the business is a total loss," he said.

The fire, which broke out about 5:30 a.m., was knocked down in two hours by the Bronson firefighters, assisted by fire crews from Lawton and Sergean Bluff, Amick said. Firefighters remained on the scene for about 7 hours to deal with hot spots and keep the fire from starting up again.

Cold weather complicated their efforts. "We had to call on the city to put some salt and sand on" because of the slick conditions, the chief said.

The fire apparently started in the kitchen area. It remains under investigation.
