ROCK RAPIDS, Iowa | A Rock Valley, Iowa, man no longer faces a charge of harassing a public official.
Magistrate Jenny Winterfield on Thursday dismissed a charge of harassment of public officers and employees against Michael Kats.
Kats, 53, had been charged in Lyon County District Court with sending text messages threatening to harm his ex-wife to a Lyon County deputy on April 7. Several law enforcement agencies then spent three hours searching for Kats before arresting him.
Lyon County Attorney Shayne Mayer had requested the dismissal of the harassment charge, saying in his motion that it was "in the furtherance of justice."
A terrorism charge filed against Kats in the same incident was dismissed in April because of insufficient evidence.
