CORRECTIONVILLE, Iowa | A woman has died after a school bus and a vehicle collided in rural Woodbury County Tuesday.

No students were inside the River Valley school bus at the time of the accident, which took place around 4:30 p.m. at the intersection of Highway 31 and O'Brien Avenue near Little Sioux County Park, authorities said.

Authorities said a southbound SUV was waiting to turn east onto O'Brien  Avenue and was rear ended by a pickup truck. The SUV was then thrown into the way of an oncoming school bus.

As a result of a collision, the bus ended up in the ditch, with the heavily damaged SUV on its side jammed into the bus. The woman driving the SUV was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities did not immediately identify the person killed in the crash. Capt. Tony Wingert of the Woodbury County Sheriff's Office confirmed the fatality and that no students were riding on the bus at the time of the accident.

The female driver of the school bus was taken to a hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

A portion of Highway 31 was temporarily closed while the accident was being investigated by the sheriff's office and the Iowa State Patrol.
