DAKOTA CITY -- The Dakota County Board of Corrections decided Monday to delay its vote on closing a county jail.
The 48-bed facility is in the county courthouse in the 1600 block of Broadway in Dakota City. County officials have said the 1975 space is outdated and the beds aren't needed. A more modern jail operates adjacent to the building.
Board Chairman Rick Bousquet on Monday said he is concerned that the county may need the extra beds after Tyson Fresh Meats expands its Dakota City operations. The project is expected to create 200 jobs.
Additionally, Bousquet said, the jail may be in demand after the Hyperion Energy Center opens in Union County, S.D.
The board is scheduled to vote on the issue again on March 19.
