ONAWA, Iowa | An Onawa man was placed on probation Monday after pleading guilty to beating another man in the head with a tire iron.
Reinrick Gashe, 23, pleaded guilty in Monona County District Court to willful injury and going armed with intent, a charge that was reduced from attempted murder as part of a plea agreement.
District Judge Jeffrey Poulson suspended a five-year prison sentence and placed Gashe on probation for three years.
Gashe drove Sonny Robinson, also of Onawa, into a rural area in the area of 230th Street and Locust Avenue east of Onawa on May 22 and told Robinson to exit the vehicle. Gashe then struck him in the head with a tire iron, court documents said.
Robinson was able to flee the scene and was taken to the hospital with head injuries. Gashe was arrested at his home a short time later.
Gashe was ordered to pay $1,162 in restitution to the Crime Victim Assistance Program and other fines.
