LARCHWOOD, Iowa - State and local authorities are investigating a fatal accident that killed a person when a vehicle crashed into and ignited a stack of hay bales early Saturday morning in a field near Larchwood.
According to the Lyon County Sheriff's Office, members of Larchwood Fire and Rescue discovered the vehicle while fighting a fire in approximately 30 round bales north of 1160 135th St.
Crews were called to the scene at 5:14 a.m.
According to the statement, investigators believe the lone occupant was driving the vehicle east on Iowa Highway 9 when the vehicle entered the north ditch and went into a bean field. Then, police say, the vehicle crossed over Highway 9 and into a corn field on the south side of the roadway, where it hit the round bales.
Deputies said they would not release the name of the victim until a positive identification could be made.
