ALTA, Iowa | An Alta man faces a second-degree theft charge, accused of selling fake gold bars online and in a local jewelry store.
Casey Paprocki, 22, allegedly sold bogus 1-ounce gold bars to Peterson Jewelry, 116 South Main St., in Alta on Oct. 14, according to a release from the Buena Vista County Sheriff's Office. After Paprocki sold the bars, it was discovered they weren't solid gold, and officers went to the jewelry store the following day, Sheriff Doug Simons said in the release.
Police searched Paprocki’s residence in the 300 block of Buena Vista Street where they found similar bars and drug paraphernalia, the release said. Officers also learned Paprocki had sold one of the bars, advertised as solid gold, to a victim in Lebanon, Pa., the release said.
Police said the sales are being investigated, and more charges are expected to be filed. -- Conrad Swanson
