SERGEANT BLUFF | An unidentified woman is being held for psychiatric observation after saying she started a Wednesday evening duplex fire in Sergeant Bluff.
According to the Sergeant Bluff Police Department, officers arrived on the scene of a structure fire at 5:10 p.m. Wednesday at 1342-1344 Vandenburg Circle and observed smoke and fire coming out the windows on the south side of a duplex.
One officer made contact with an adult female who was standing in the driveway and placed her in his patrol vehicle for safety.
During a conversation, the female told the officer no one else was in the structure and confessed to starting the fire.
Other residents of the duplex were able to find shelter, according to Sergeant Bluff Fire Chief Anthony Gaul.
SERGEANT BLUFF | A fire investigation is ongoing in Sergeant Bluff to determine the cause of a Wednesday night fire that left a duplex red-tagged.
The Iowa State Fire Marshal is assisting Sergeant Bluff’s emergency departments in an investigation on the fire.
Firefighters from Sergeant Bluff, Sioux City, North Sioux City, South Sioux City and the 185th battled the blaze until sometime after 9 p.m.
The building was red-tagged as unfit for occupation and its future is undetermined.
