SIOUX CITY -- A Sioux City man who stabbed and punched his girlfriend was sentenced Friday to 10 years in prison.
Carlos Barrera, 27, pleaded guilty in Woodbury County District Court to one count of willful injury causing serious injury.
As part of a plea agreement, charges of going armed with intent and domestic abuse assault causing bodily injury were dismissed. The state also agreed to remove habitual offender and dangerous weapon sentencing enhancements.
Barrera was arrested Nov. 3 after police were called to a room at Motel 6, 6166 Harbor Drive, near Sioux Gateway Airport.
According to court documents, Barrera used a knife with a 2-inch blade to stab LynDea Boetger in the left wrist and left thigh while they drove to the motel on Interstate 29. Barrera also punched Boetger in the face, breaking one of her teeth. Boetger's injuries were not life-threatening.
Barrera told police he lost his temper with Boetger because she had stayed overnight the previous night at another man's home.
Barrera was ordered to pay $80 restitution to Iowa Crime Victim Assistance and also an amount to be determined to Boetger.
