SPIRIT LAKE, Iowa | A motorcycle rider remained hospitalized Wednesday, five days after colliding with a sheriff deputy's squad car in Spirit Lake.
Laverne Schweertmann, 55, was driving east in the westbound lane when he hit the passenger-side door of a westbound squad car on Friday, according to a statement from the Dickinson County Sheriff's Office. The crash happened east of Spirit Lake about 2 a.m.
Schweertmann, of Breckenridge, Minn., was taken to Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls.
He remained hospitalized Wednesday morning, an official said. Information on Schweertmann’s medical condition wasn’t immediately available.
The deputy, Josh Roberts, wasn’t hurt.
Iowa State Patrol is investigating the crash. The investigating trooper didn't immediately respond to a phone message seeking comment on the case. -- Molly Montag
