SIOUX CITY | A 27-year-old woman died of a gunshot wound and four people suffered stab wounds and knife cuts early Saturday when a dispute in the 1600 block of Villa Ave. escalated into an assault, police said.

The victims' names have not been released, but Fernando Jaimes-Martinez, 33, of Sioux City is charged with one count each of first-degree murder, willful injury and intimidation with a weapon, all felonies. He was in custody in Woodbury County Jail on Saturday.

Those injured were taken to St. Luke's Regional Medical Center and Mercy Medical Center-Sioux City, police said in a statement. Two were treated and released and the other two remained hospitalized Saturday.

According to police, one of those involved in the dispute retrieved a gun as the incident escalated about 2:30 a.m. and fired it at a group of people several times. The 27-year-old woman was hit by one of the bullets. Police recovered the gun.

Authorities are continuing their investigation, and anyone with information is asked to call Crimestoppers at 712-258-8477.
