SIOUX CITY -- The Woodbury County Sheriff's Office issued the following warning in regard to a phone scam targeting area residents:
"Local law enforcement agencies are again receiving complaints from citizens receiving phone calls where the caller is claiming to be with the Woodbury County Sheriff's Office and the person receiving the call has missed jury duty and they need to pay a fine or face arrest. The caller will then ask the person receiving the call to make the payment by purchasing gift cards or some other form of prepaid money card and then give the caller the information off of the card.
"As a reminder, the Woodbury County Sheriff's Office will never contact you by phone requesting money for any reason. Remember to always independently verify any request for money or personal information from any agency, organization, or business before sending money or releasing information. Thank you."
