SPIRIT LAKE, Iowa | Dickinson County Sheriff Greg Baloun is warning residents of an apparent scam in which people are receiving text messages that their credit card has been compromised.

Baloun issued the warning Friday after receiving a tip from a local resident who reported receiving the text message, which directed the recipient to call a phone number. When the resident called the number, an automated system asked for credit card information, Social Security number and other personal information. The person realized it was a scam and was able to avoid fraudulent use of the credit card by contacting the credit card company and canceling the card.

Baloun said the sheriff's office has received multiple tips on this type of scam.

Baloun reminded people to give Social Security, credit/debit card and other banking information only to known and trusted sources.
