SIOUX CITY | Cone Park will open to the public the evening of Dec. 21, giving park-goers their first chance to take the new winter tubing hill at the all-seasons recreation facility for a spin.
Sioux City announced Wednesday morning that it will hold a ribbon cutting for the park at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, followed by a public opening two days later at 5 p.m.
Located at 3800 Line Drive, Cone Park is all-seasons park that will feature tubing and ice skating in the winter and a splash pad and multi-use trail in the summer. It also features a fire pit and day lodge.
The park's hours during its first week of operations will be the following:
--5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Dec. 21.
--9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Dec. 22, 23.
--9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Dec. 24.
--Closed on Christmas Day.
--9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Jan. 1.
The park's normal hours -- 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on weekends and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekends -- will begin Jan. 2. Admission for a four-hour tubing session ranges from $7 to $10, depending on the time of day.
Cosmic Tubing -- a two-hour tubing period featuring a multi-color LED light show set to music --will also be available at the park from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays beginning Dec. 22, as well as on New Year's Eve. Admission costs $10.
The tubing hill can accommodate up to 300 users for each four-hour session. City staff recommend reserving a spot ahead of time, as they expect a high number of visitors. Reservations can be made online at webtrac.sioux-city.org, on the phone at 712-279-6126 or in person at the Long Lines Family Rec Center, 401 Gordon Drive.
The use of the hill will be first-come, first-serve for those without a reservation. Groups of 10 or more can call the above number to reserve spots.
The minimum age to use the hill is 5 years old. All tubes will be provided by the park.
Parking will be available at the IBP Ice Center. Limited parking will also be available along the west side of Line Drive.
Ice skating likely will open in mid-January, according to city staff. Work is continuing on the rink's refrigeration equipment. A maintenance building must also still be constructed.
Tubing admission covers skating fees, but those wishing to only skate will be able to do so for $5. Those who need to rent skates can do so for $3.
The day lodge will serve as the base of operations for the park, as well as a place to warm up. Concessions will include coffee, hot cocoa, wine, beer and snacks.
Through Dec. 15, Sioux Cityans can purchase gift cards for general admission at the Cone Park tubing hill and ice skating rink. The $7 gift cards will cover the entrance fee for one person to use the tubing hill and ice skating rink one time during the 2017-2018 winter season.
