SIOUX CITY | Lawton city officials are working to set a Nov. 7 election regarding a bond issue with proceeds to be used to build a $1.6 million fire station.
Lawton City Clerk Carla Eidenshink on Monday said city council members want to replace the existing fire station, which is a few decades old. The plan is to build and equip a new fire station on Ash Street, near the water plant in the Woodbury County town of 908 people.
Woodbury County elections official Steve Hofmeyer said he has been contacted by a firm representing the city of Lawton about the pending bond issue. Eidenshink said the council members in the next meeting on Sept. 5 will officially take action to hold the bond issue vote in November.
Eidenshink said the city could complete the new fire station within one to two years, if voters approve the $1.6 million in funding. Plans and bids to undertake the construction work would follow an affirmative vote.
There would be extra space for some community functions.
