SIOUX CITY -- The Rev. Cary Gordon, of Cornerstone World Outreach, has decided to endorse Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum as the best candidate to defeat President Barack Obama.

Gordon, who began a push to elect Christian conservatives a few years ago, said the former U.S. senator from Pennsylvania is the best candidate in a wide field of Republicans.

Gordon will release a video today summarizing his thoughts on Santorum, who has campaigned widely in Northwest Iowa but has not caught on in state or national polls.

He cited Santorum's support of traditional marriage and anti-abortion stance, and Gordon wants to stop "the barbarism of murdering babies."

Santorum is also "committed to rescuing this nation from economic disaster," Gordon says in the video.

Gordon told the Journal he picked Santorum over his other finalist, Michele Bachmann. He said the key thing is to defeat Obama and that some Americans won't vote for a female president.

He said that's not a stance he agrees with but that it's a political reality that could impact a general election.

Gordon said he lumped Newt Gingrich, Herman Cain and Mitt Romney into one category, which has the title, "I can't trust you."

This is the first time Gordon, an associate pastor at the church, has endorsed a presidential candidate, and he said he hopes the endorsement will have influence with Iowans.

"Maybe I'll be the first little domino that causes something to happen. I'm also talking to a lot of the leadership in the state, saying let's coalesce behind one person now. We don't have any more time to argue, let's just get behind one person, make the decision and go," Gordon said.
