With July 4 falling on a Saturday this year, local, state and federal government will observe the holiday on Friday.
That means most government offices will be closed Friday, including Sioux City's City Hall and the Woodbury County Courthouse. Many private employers also will give their employees the day off, but a number of retailers and restaurants will remain open during the extended holiday weekend.
Here's a rundown of holiday hours for some other public places:
Post offices will be open Friday, and mail will be delivered, but will be closed on Saturday, with no mail delivery.
The Iowa Department of Transportation driver’s license stations, including the station in Sioux City, will be open Friday, and closed Saturday and Monday. The stations are normally closed on Mondays.
Sioux City Public Museum
The museum will extend its hours of operation until 8 p.m. on Thursday, during the Mardi Gras Festivale’s Big Parade. On Friday, the museum will be open from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m., to ensure visitors can check out the special exhibit “Saturday in the Park: Rockin’ for 25 Years.” The museum will be closed on Saturday, and regular hours will resume on Sunday.
Sergeant Floyd River Museum and Welcome Center
There will be no changes to the Sergeant Floyd River Museum and Welcome Center’s regular weekend hours. The riverfront center will be open 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.
Sioux City Art Center
The Art Center will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, closed on Saturday, and then open from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday.
The Lewis and Clark Encounter Center and The Betty Strong Encounter Center
No changes to the usual weekend hours. The two centers will be open from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. The centers are normally closed on Mondays.
Dorothy Pecaut Nature Center
The center will be open from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and from 1 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. on Sunday. The center is normally closed on Monday.
Sioux City pools
Leif Erikson, Riverside, Cook, Lewis and Leeds pools will have regular hours on Friday, and reduced hours from 1 to 5 p.m. on Saturday. Regular hours will resume on Sunday.
The Long Lines Family Recreation Center
The center will be closed on Saturday, but regular hours resume on Sunday.
Sioux City public libraries
All the libraries will be closed from Friday through Sunday, with normal hours resuming on Monday.
There are no changes to garbage and recycling collections for the week before or week after the July 4 holiday.
